Hello Subscribers — here’s your exclusive cont Hello Subscribers — here’s your exclusive content as a post. Today’s topic is fungal overgrowth. Have you ever experienced excess yeast in your body? I have a vulnerability towards it and have recently been eating more carbs as part of an Ayahuasca dieta (!) so I noticed fungal overgrowth on my ring finger and pinkie (see photo). Curious if you’ve ever had this, and what helped?

Did you know that you produce four hundred times m Did you know that you produce four hundred times more serotonin in the gut compared to the brain?

Did you know that your gut makes other feel-good hormones like melatonin and estrogen?

Or that imbalances in your gut flora can cause altered thyroid function?

So you can start to see how problems in the gut can be contributing to the symptoms of depression.

👉The key is to look upstream of the depressed symptoms for the root cause.

The microbial ecosystem that resides within your intestinal tract isn’t static—it changes with diet, age, stress, other environmental factors, and health status as well as medication exposures.

Some of these factors can shift your gut microbiome in the direction of depression.

There is constant talk between the gut and brain: some of it travels along the vagus nerve and some of it travels in the blood, especially in nutrients, hormones, proteins, peptides (smaller versions of proteins), and inflammatory messengers like antibodies and cytokines.

The good news is that while abnormal microbiota can lead to brain/body dysfunction and cause brain symptoms like depression, correcting these disturbances is proven to reverse symptoms.

Depression is closely intertwined with a healthy balance in the gut.

👉Maintaining and restoring the condition of the gut ecosystem can prevent and reverse brain symptoms like depression and burnout.

Having a family history of depression increases yo Having a family history of depression increases your risk. If one identical twin is diagnosed with depression, the other twin has a 70 percent chance of developing it.

Here’s a quick review of what we know about the genetics of depression (see the slides for more details).

The depression genes include:

▪Serotonin transporter (SLC6A4)
Variants for this gene are classified as long (normal) or short (variant). Women with short serotonin transporters show greater amygdala hypervigilance, which may worsen when estrogen declines, as in late perimenopause or menopause.

▪Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)
If you inherit a variation from one parent, you have a 3-fold greater risk of depression. However, if you inherit the variation from both parents, you are more likely to be introverted and resistant to depression when faced with repeated defeat. So inheriting a variation of this gene can work for or against your mental health.

▪Glucocorticoid receptor (NR3C1)
Variations in the NR3C1 gene involving the glucocorticoid receptor are associated with major depression in women but not men, which points to the gene/environment vulnerability that may account for why women have higher rates of depression.

▪Calcium channel (CACNA1C)
When you inherit a variant, calcium flow into your brain cells gets dysregulated, which puts you at greater risk of major depression.

▪FK506 binding protein 5 (FKBP5)
In addition to being involved in PTSD and anxiety, FKBP5 is associated with lifetime major depressive disorder (MDD) diagnosis as well as structural changes in the brain.

▪Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR)
This gene has an inconsistent or at best modest association with depression.

*The caveat is that a gene polymorphism (variation) does not mean a diagnosis of depression; it just means that your genes may predispose you. So if you’re exposed to certain biological and environmental factors—such as maltreatment as a child or specific toxins—your risk may be higher.
