Continuous glucose monitoring has reversed my pre- Continuous glucose monitoring has reversed my pre-diabetes. It’s a big deal. #metabolichealth
After 40, my metabolic health began to decline. I After 40, my metabolic health began to decline. I had prediabetes with fasting glucose that hovered from 95-115 mg/dL. Ugh.

It would take me hours to get dressed because nothing in my closet would fit—and it saddened me that what worked in the past no longer worked for me.

That experience frustrated me for many reasons.

How do we define health given the societal and cultural pressures on women’s bodies to be a certain way?

How do we rise above the diet trope?

How do we define health in a way that works for us, and isn’t just buying into someone else’s idea, AND in that definition, include a healthy sustainable weight without fat shaming?

My book WOMEN FOOD AND HORMONES answers these questions. The book:

▪Provides a fat-burning solution that gets results, based on the best science and research
▪Exposes the keto paradox and identifies the reasons why so many women fail to lose weight on the classic ketogenic diet
▪Shows you how to improve metabolic flexibility and flip your metabolic switch to transform your body
▪Features intermittent fasting combined with keto that is customized for women and honors our hormones, challenges, and unique biology
▪Focuses on hormones that are rarely addressed in women’s health and fitness, namely growth hormone and testosterone

Few things on earth are as misunderstood as women, Few things on earth are as misunderstood as women, food, and hormones.

Most diets were created by men for men, but women’s bodies don’t work the same way.

Learning to speak the language of hormones is the empowering way forward.

When you speak the language of hormones, you can improve metabolism, lose fat, and finally maintain a healthy body weight.

It took me a few decades to understand that balancing your metabolic hormones is the key to true and lasting health, the type of health that makes you feel grateful and brimming with joy when you wake up in the morning, ready to make the world a better place for yourself and the people you love.

I’m sure you know by now that hormones are the key that most people miss. But I learned what helped me at age 35 no longer works now that I’m older, so I had to seek a new strategy and look to new metabolic hormones to optimize.

This new strategy is what I share in my book WOMEN FOOD AND HORMONES.

The book offers a new health plan that integrates an evidence-based approach to the ketogenic diet for women. The 4-Week Protocol includes detoxification, nutritional ketosis and intermittent fasting.

Can intermittent fasting affect your hormones? Th Can intermittent fasting affect your hormones?

The answer is yes. However, intermittent fasting can have both a positive and negative effect on hormonal regulation.

👉On the positive side, IF is one of the most effective ways to improve insulin signaling, and downstream, blood sugar.
That usually results in loss of weight and belly fat.

👉On the negative side, some people on IF restrict calories to the point where they lose the signal that triggers ovulation, also known as luteinizing hormone (LH) pulsatility, and their periods stop or become irregular. The solution is a food plan that resets hormones for weight loss, not so high that you gain weight but not so low in calories that you lose LH.

Researchers have defined that threshold as > 13.6 calories/pound of lean body mass in women. So if your lean body mass is 100 pounds, you must eat healthy, hormone-balancing food at a level of 1360 calories or higher.

There are several evidence-based protocols for intermittent fasting that are tested in randomized trials.

One method is the 5/2 whole day fasting where you restrict calories for 2 days and eat in a regular manner for the other five days.

Another method is known as time-restricted eating where you restrict your eating window within a 24 hour period. A third method is the modified alternate-day fast, which seems to work better for postmenopausal women versus premenopausal women in terms of weight loss.

In general, I prefer the 16/8 fasting protocol for women or the modified alternate day fasting protocol, though in my practice, the first is easier.

Some women find that fasting two or more days per week (restricting calories to less than 500-800 on those days) can trigger survival mode, with an increase in cortisol, and can set off disordered eating.

Intermittent fasting can be very helpful in fighting the “menopot”, that menopausal weight gain around your midsection that appears almost overnight. For the right individual, I start with 14/10 and ramp up to 16/8, and see if it works. If it doesn’t achieve results, I try next the modified alternate-day fasting or the fasting mimicking diet.

What type of intermittent fasting do you do?
Who is an ideal candidate for intermittent fasting Who is an ideal candidate for intermittent fasting?

Ideal candidates for intermittent fasting are those who are overweight or obese as well as those who are prediabetic. Women who have PCOS often have signs of insulin resistance and find it very difficult to lose weight. IF can be very helpful in helping them lower their insulin levels and manage their weight.

Who should avoid intermittent fasting?

▪Pregnant women as this might affect blood sugar levels, baby development & general health.
▪Women who are breastfeeding should not practice IF as this may affect their breastmilk supply.
▪People suffering from heart problems or high blood pressure as this might lead to electrolytes imbalances or any other medical condition.
▪Those who have reactive hypoglycemia should avoid IF or perform only under careful physician observation.
▪Those who suffer from disordered eating such as bulimia or anorexia. Restricted eating windows can be very triggering, and this needs to be monitored closely.

Who should practice caution with intermittent fasting?

Women with thyroid or adrenal issues may need a slow onramp, starting first with twelve- to fourteen-hour fasts twice per week only.

For those with thyroid issues, Hashimoto's in particular, who are concerned about blood sugar: ultimately, IF helps blood sugar swings.

👉The key is to listen to your body. Start slow, ramp up step by step. If you don't feel right, then you may need to address the root cause first instead of simultaneously.

Is intermittent fasting right for you?
