How to Rock the Hay-bale: My First Fashion Show for Fibershed A.K.A. The 150-Mile Wardrobe

By Sara Gottfried, MD | April 2, 2014

Recently, I walked my first runway. No, it wasn’t New York Fashion Week. It was a straw-bale runway in rural Point Reyes Station, CA. Does that challenge your idea of fashion? Make you rethink glamour? That’s the point. That’s why eco-visionary and author Rebecca Burgess asked friends in the fledgling eco-fashion realm to design some foxy togs…

Crucial truths are locked in your genes. When unlo Crucial truths are locked in your genes. When unlocked, they may forever alter the way you think about how your body ages. I started at age 39 to upgrade my lifestyle and throughout my 40s found benefits I never thought possible. ⠀
⠀
I’m now 53 and in the best shape of my life. I focus on the rigorous methods of smart, unbiased researchers who are optimistic about which natural efforts can result in extended vitality as well as on the cultural insights from long-lived populations around the world. I’m especially fascinated by the practical experience of my own patients, and I’ve observed which habits are the easiest to adopt and, therefore, the most successful. Read my book YOUNGER ( link in bio @saragottfriedmd ) if you want to learn about all of these habits and the rigorous evidence behind them. I will be sharing a few of them in the next few posts.⠀

Before scientists sequenced the entire human genome, in 2003, people figured DNA was the blueprint for the cause of all disease.⠀
⠀
Yet we now know that disease isn’t hardwired into your DNA but is much more malleable, a result of complex interactions involving your DNA, your lifestyle, and your environment. Essentially, you have the power to reconfigure the way your DNA talks to your body, a process known as gene expression. ⠀
⠀
Let's disrupt the rules of aging together. ➡️➡️ Follow me as I show you how we might master the targeted lifestyle choices that affect the way your DNA communicates within your body. ⠀

If you are new to my feed, hello and welcome! Thou If you are new to my feed, hello and welcome! Thought I’d share 5 things about who I am that you may not know.

♦️ I’m 53 and in the best shape of my life. I used to struggle to maintain a healthy weight. Even though I’m genetically programmed to be a 200-pound diabetic, I know what to do—and actually do it. However, sometimes the body doesn’t respond to rigid rules. So the framework has evolved and it’s one of my favorite topics to post about. If you have particular issues or ideas you want me to address, let me know!

♦️ I may look white but I am multiracial (9.5% Sub-Saharan African, plus 1.6% North African/West Asian). Many of us are, whether you realize it or not. Over the past few years and especially since May 25, I am deeply aware of my white privilege and the ugly racial disparities in medicine and health. I am Jewish. I am listening, brainstorming, and working with colleagues on how to dismantle racism in medicine. I started a new feed over at @antiracisthealth to amplify Black voices in health, document racial disparity in healthcare, and discover solutions. I’d love for you to join me. Let’s move humanity forward.

♦️I love yoga + meditation not because it’s the best head check around. Yoga is a radical act of liberation that’s especially helpful if you’ve experienced trauma. Yoga helps me dial down my nervous system in order to live harmoniously with other humans.

♦️I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my husband, two daughters, and a labradoodle, but I work at Marcus Institute of Integrative Health in Villanova, PA. I see patients via telehealth, and once per quarter, I travel to Philly to see folks in person.

♦️ I practice precision, integrative, and functional medicine. I treat people, not disease. I look at where you are now, how far you’ve come, quantify your health, and together, we figure out where you want to aim next. It’s not a pill for every ill. It’s not one method fits all. It’s a mission. I want to change the conversation we are having about health and how to create it.

Thank you for joining my page and hanging out here on the Gram with me! Let me know about you and any questions or comments you might have!👇🏼

It's not your age that’s your enemy, it’s the It's not your age that’s your enemy, it’s the loss of function in your body. ⠀
⠀
Five key factors make aging more pronounced after forty:⠀
⠀
MUSCLE FACTOR⠀
❌Your metabolism slows down with age, which means you accumulate more fat and lose muscle. Think of aging as beginning in your muscles. ⠀
✔️Focus on preserving and building your muscle mass as you age past forty.⠀
⠀
BRAIN FACTOR⠀
❌Your neurons (nerve cells) lose speed and flexibility. Alcohol makes you foggier than it did, and you lose sleep. Connections between neurons, called synapses, are not what they used to be, so finding words may become an issue. The balance shifts toward more forgetting and less remembering⠀
✔️ Focus on keeping your brain regenerating and malleable (or “plastic”) as you get older.⠀
⠀
HORMONE FACTOR⠀
❌Your hormones change for the worse⠀
✔️The right food, sleep, exercise, and support for detoxification can reverse many hormone problems associated with aging.⠀
⠀
GUT FACTOR⠀
❌ Poor gut health can disrupt hormone balance, stress can poke holes in your gut and lead to food intolerances and make you absorb nutrients poorly.⠀
✔️With the right food and stress management, you can turn your microbiome around to decelerate your aging clock instead of speed it up⠀
⠀
TOXIC FAT FACTOR⠀
❌ Toxins from the environment accumulate in your fat. Scientists call them gerontogens. They are similar to how carcinogens increase your risk of cancer, and they can work against you and cause premature aging.⠀
✔️With the right support, we can go after what causes you to accumulate them.⠀
⠀
In YOUNGER, I show you how to disarm, prevent, and reverse these five factors and change the expression of genes that influence them. If you are tired of the sinking feeling that you are getting older, slower, and fatter by the day, it's time to discover how you can unlock your genes and live longer, stronger, and better than ever.
Changes in the body as you age are actually measur Changes in the body as you age are actually measurable by way of biomarker testing, including a blood test for telomere length. Telomeres are biological timekeepers in your cells. A telomere is a collection of DNA at the end of your chromosome that acts like a knot at the end of a thread. A telomere signals to the enzymes duplicating your DNA that they’re almost at the end of the strand and it’s time to stop, just as a knot tells you to stop pulling a piece of thread with a needle. For nearly all normal cells, each time a cell divides, telomeres get shorter. At a certain point, the cell dies because the telomeres are gone and the ends of the chromosomes are no longer protected.

It’s normal to lose telomere length as you age, but only at a specific, healthy rate. Some people lose length on their telomeres faster than average. Short telomeres put you at a greater risk not just for wrinkles but also for heart disease, cancer, and early death. Overall, people with short telomeres have an up to 300% higher risk of cancer of the pancreas, bone, bladder, prostate, lung, kidney, and neck. Those who delight in quantifying biological age can get their telomeres tested at labs I recommend in my book, YOUNGER.

My own wake-up call came when I tested my telomeres at age 45. I had the telomeres of a 65-year-old woman. I realized no amount of pills or injections could save me; I needed to repair my body and telomeres the old-fashioned way with rigorous lifestyle interventions in an N-of-1 design.

Studies of telomeres show that moderate levels of activity protect telomere length best (Du, 2012).

Yoga is associated with longer telomeres, higher levels of nerve- growth factor, improved antioxidant status (and thus better defense against oxidative stress), reduced inflammatory gene expression, and increased healthspan (Krishna, 2015).

Develop ways to help you clear stress better as toxic stress shortens telomeres. High levels of glucocorticoids shrink telomeres, and may arrest some cells into the zombie-like state of senescence (where the cell is neither alive nor dead) and release chemical messengers that promote inflammation.

What are you doing to protect your telomeres?
