If you suffer from anxiety, a hormonal imbalance m If you suffer from anxiety, a hormonal imbalance may be involved.

Sex hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain interact, contributing to imbalances. This is why I always advise addressing the root cause before resorting to medication.

▪Dysregulated cortisol—high or low, or both within the same day
▪Insulin resistance—high insulin and high blood sugar
▪Thyroid dysfunction—usually high, but low thyroid function can also mimic anxiety symptoms
▪Low estrogen
▪Low progesterone

Women in perimenopause and menopause with hot flashes and night sweats are more likely to develop anxiety, more fears, decreased memory and concentration, poor sleep, and somatic complaints (like muscle pain) when they are experiencing symptoms of low estrogen and low progesterone.

Poor sleep can then exacerbate other hormonal problems, such as dysregulated cortisol and insulin resistance.

Evaluation of anxiety and depression during the menopausal transition is tricky because of the overlap between symptoms of anxiety and depression and symptoms of menopause.

Certainly, lifestyle-based approaches like removing caffeine, eliminating foods that may trigger a stress response (gluten, dairy), exercise, and cognitive behavioral therapy are warranted, and if not helpful, a trial of bioidentical estrogen and/or progesterone may help.

You can read more about the safety and risk factors of bioidentical hormones on my website blog at the link in my bio @saragottfriedmd

I want you to know that you’re not doomed to be anxious, burned out, overly sensitive, in survival mode, or depressed for the rest of your life.

How do you soothe the emotional tension?

Coming up in the next, I will share how you can eat for calm, how to improve your sleep, what are my favorite chill-out brain/body botanicals and nutrients as well as yoga exercises that can help.

Since we sequenced the human genome in 2003, “ep Since we sequenced the human genome in 2003, “epigenetics” gives us hope that we are more than just the sum of our genes.

As Francis Collins MD/PhD once said in a brilliant summary of epigenetics, genes load the gun but environment pulls the trigger.

Might the air we breathe, the food we eat, the alcohol we drink or not drink, the trauma nearly all of us experienced, even the emotions we now feel, influence not only our genes but those of children and their children?

How have you made epigenetics actionable?

My perpetual self editor wants to add that 70-90% of chronic disease may be epigenetic and due to environmental factors like how you eat, move, sleep, connect, and supplement. Caption inspired by Heard and Martienssen,
