Grocery Shopping with Dr. Sara: 5 Quick, Healthy, Detox-Friendly Foods

Do you feel too busy to prepare nourishing food? Me too. That means I’m constantly scouting for food that’s easy to eat on the run, or that’s amenable to a quick assembly at home.

Today, I want to share with you my favorite upgrades that I’m loving—and all are compliant with The Hormone Reset Detox! Even if you’re not detoxing, these are low-allergen options that are healthy for all.

When you’re looking for foods to eat while detoxing, I recommend that you avoid any food with sugar in the top 5 ingredients. Stay away from processed foods, and try to keep your food as clean as possible.

5 Quick, Healthy Detox-Friendly Foods:

Woman Shopping for Healthy Food1. Brussel Bytes.

If the kale chip fad left you wanting more, check out the new Brussel Bytes by MyBrusselBytes.com. Non-GMO verified and gluten free, these are heartier than kale chips and taste yummy, My favorite flavor? Chili pumpkin seed crunch. The other flavor is apple tamarind. $5.99 for a 2-ounce bag.

2. Mission Heirloom.

Earlier this month I went on a tour of the Mission Heirloom kitchen, a gluten free commercial kitchen in Berkeley that is reimagining the way food is produced. They have standards that make me weep for joy: NO processed refine oils, sugars, gluten, grain, legumes, NO cooking with plastic, aluminum, technique that introduce toxins, umami, and NO using ingredients that sound like chemicals.

Inspired by their daughter with Hashimoto’s disease and how food healed her autoimmunity, owners Bobby and Yrmis are my new BFFs and I fully support what they’re doing. This week I picked up my mint-scented red and green cabbage slaw, leaf-to-root turnips and shiitakes, plus truffle salt, coconut oil and Yucan crunch cracker (made out of 100% yuca root fiber, free of gluten and grains).  Heat, plate, eat. Easy! They deliver throughout the Bay Area, or come to my hood for pick up. They are bringing their kitchen to a city near you in the next few years (I believe Los Angeles is next), so let them know if you love what they’re doing! Prices vary.

3. Snip Chips.

I love the crunch of a potato chip, but eating them wreaks havoc on my blood sugar. Instead, I reach for parsnip chips, also by Brussel Bytes. Go for the chipotle lime cilantro or the cheezy herb truffle. $5.99 for a 2-ounce bag.

4. Red Lentil Penne.

I’ve gotten off pasta, but my kids still love it. Fortunately, there are delicious alternatives to the rubbery gluten free options of yesterday, such as Tolerant’s red lentil penne pasta. One ingredient: lentils. Organic. Non-GMO. Best of all: kid friendly! $32.97 for three 12-ounce boxes.

5. Endangered Species Dark Chocolate with 88% Cocoa.

Healthy Dark ChocolateOn the detox, one to two squares of extra dark chocolate is allowed. Yesterday while I shopped at Whole Foods, I picked up Endangered Species. Gluten free. Non GMO. Certified by the Rainforest Alliance. Plus 10% of net profits are donated to support endangered species, habitat, and humanity. Learn more at ChocolateBar.com. $2.41 for 3-ounce bar.

You can tell a lot about a person from what they toss in their grocery cart. Don’t settle for food that’s less than optimal – it just takes a few small tweaks to eat the food that will deeply satisfy you and crowd out the bad stuff.

Be mindful and fill up your cart with loveliness! Your body will thank you for it.
